At Two Mile Hill Primary, we strive for children to be confident in their fluency and application of mathematical skills.

We want our children to:

  • become fluent in their fundamentals, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

By the end of Key Stage Two, we want our children to:

  • Understand how the number system works.
  • Understand the inverse relationship between addition, subtraction and multiplication and division.
  • Derive, recall and use number facts fluently and quickly.
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematical skills.
  • Explain their methods and reasoning using correct mathematical terms.

To support the teaching and learning of the National Curriculum, Two Mile Hill Primary School use Abacus scheme of work to ensure that there is challenge, progression and support through Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.
